Mutual Aid Projects

About

Mutual Aid Projects are projects based on the voluntary and reciprocal exchange of resources and services for mutual benefit. In these projects, people take responsibility for caring for one another through challenging conditions, such as homelessness or food insecurity. Some examples of Mutual Aid Projects include food distributions, clothing drives, and disaster relief.

Community Fridge Initiative

The Community Fridge Initiative is a network of refrigerators (sometimes called ‘freedges’) located in public spaces to enable food sharing within a community. Some community fridges also have an associated area for nonperishable food and other supplies. Fridges are ‘housed’ by hosts in private homes, businesses, and nonprofits where volunteers and community members stock and clean the fridges. Participating hosts advocate for community trust and run on the simple guidelines of “Take what you need, leave what you can.”
