Point-in-Time (PIT) Count

In accordance with 24 CFR  578.7, Continuums of Care must conduct annual sheltered point-in-time counts and biennial unsheltered counts during the last 10 days of January. Although this count is not fully inclusive, it provides a snapshot of the local homeless crisis and serves as a baseline and consistent methodology.

Why is this important? Through point in time counts, communities can better know their incidence of homelessness, and importantly, HUD funding is allocated to Continuums of Care based on their rates of homelessness and their performance outcomes. Communities can also better align their resources with needs based on PIT results.
